How Do Scholarships work at Junior Colleges

Scholarship Opportunities

There is often a perception that Junior Colleges in the US do not or cannot offer scholarships.  Junior Colleges can choose to play a sport in Division I , Division II  or Division III conferences.

The following information shows how scholarships are distributed:

Division I

If a Junior college plays in a Division I conference:

A maximum of tuition and fees, room and board, course related books, up to $250 in course required supplies per academic year, is allowable provided such course supplies are required by all students in the course and specified in the institutions catalog or course syllabus, and transportation costs one time per academic year to and from the college by direct route.

Division II

If a Junior College plays in a Division II conference:

A maximum of tuition, fees, course related books, and up to $250 in course required supplies per academic year, provided such course supplies are required by all students in the course and specified in the institutions catalog or course syllabus. (Division II scholarships can not include room and/or board through a fee or any other system.)

Division III

If a Junior College plays in a Division III conference:

They cannot offer athletic scholarships, these schools can however offer what is called Grants-in-Aid.  An athletic grant-in-aid may be awarded to any student-athlete in recognition of his/her athletic ability provided the student-athlete is admitted to the institution as a regular student.
It shall be limited to a maximum of:
  • Tuition and Fees
  • Room and Board
  • Required course-related books and up to $250 in course required supplies per academic year, provided such course supplies are required by all students in the course and specified in the institutions catalog or course syllabus.
  • Transportation costs one time per academic year to and from the college by direct route.
